    • Christopher D. Sims speaks with local press about being a SoundCloud Hero

END OF STORY: BIO, MORE ABOUT SOUNDCLOUD ROCKFORD — You know about Facebook, the king of social networking services, and MySpace, where youth used to hang out online before Facebook. Enter SoundCloud, an online social networking service established in Germany in 2007, that allows musicians and others to collaborate, promote and distribute audio recordings. Christopher D. Sims of Rockford — who works full time as a poet, rapper and spoken word artist with a political and social justice bend — has been named a “hero” by SoundCloud for using the company’s website to share his works and to help others join in. Sims is one of 20 SoundCloud Heroes. He was selected from among 200 applicants. By the end of the year, SoundCloud will have 40 heroes, including some from outside the U.S., a company spokeswoman said. In choosing Sims, SoundCloud said: “Christopher is the Poet Laureate of Rockford ... and has published two poetry books. If there’s a spoken word artist you want to connect with, he’s your man. As a SoundCloud Hero, Christopher wants to address social issues through the SoundCloud community’s talents.” In his SoundCloud role, Sims said he reaches out to other artists to let them know how easy it is to use the platform to get their works out to local and international crowds. “It’s a lot more accessible,” said Sims. “There is a record button on your page, and you can instantly send it to a person or record producer,” he said. Sims said he is working with artists in France and the Washington D.C./Maryland area as a result of SoundCloud. “People are constantly reaching out or sharing how to do things with me,” he said. Sims is a Rockford native who not only brings poems to life through spoken word performances but also writes and performs rap music with Ladder to the Sun, a local rap group. He is known in the Rockford art scene and has performed many times in local coffee shops and bars. “Christopher Sims has given of his time and talent to the Rockford Area Arts Council on many occasions,” said Anne E. O’Keefe, president and chief executive officer of the Rockford Area Arts Council. “He has inspired participants of the Poetry Out Loud program by emceeing and sharing his work during the breaks, showing the power of spoken word,” she said. “He stepped right up to take the stage at the Operation Respect kick-off event, and he provided his talent at the 50/50 Art Matters and RAAC art show last December.”Publication: The Rockford Register Star (
