Michael Martarano
Artist / Designer / Composer
Background: Born in 1978, Michael Martarano grew up in the urban landscape of abandoned factories and silk mills of Paterson, NJ during a period of extreme poverty and tension in American inner cities. It is from this environment that Michael attributes much of his inspiration. After having lived, studied and worked as a visual artist in New York City and Berlin, Germany. Michael has settled in New Haven, Connecticut where he is currently working on sketch and photographic series, composing music, and producing sound installations. Michael Martarano fuses music with visual display to create a landscape of drama and emotion. Using repetition and improvisation, electronic and acoustic sound, he builds compositions that are sensitive, expressive, and powerful. Somewhere between elegance and brutality, his images deal strongly with the contrasts and contradictions of human experience, expressing them with an acute attention to detail and draftsman-like precision. His recent work includes: Pain and Decoration: Sketches and paintings from Berlin, 2001. Everything Falls Apart: Recorded album, 2001. Time's Bridge: Sound installation, 2002. Horrors in New Time: Recorded album, 2003. Ground and Fury: Photographic series, 2004. Loose Connections: Quadraphonic sound installation, 2005. Soundtracks for Coffee: A live improvised performance, 2005. Erro Crasso: A live fusion of sculpture, music and dance, 2006. Inside a Home: Photographic series, 2006. The Thwarting Archive: A monolithic sculpture and sound installation, 2006.
