Complex human nature
---------------------------------------
: All living creatures have their innate tendencies and human beings too act according to one's nature. Valuable insights on the complexities of human nature are to be gleaned from the discussions in the Bhagavad Gita on the three Gunas • Satva, Rajas and Tamas.
The Gunas are part and parcel of the entire nature and they are manifest in the cause of creation (Rajas), its sustenance (Satva) and dissolution (Tamas). Lord Krishna says that while the entire world is characterised by these Gunas, He is beyond them, and this is the reason why the world is not able to comprehend Him, said Swamini Satyavratananda in a lecture.
It is an enlightenment that goes beyond the five senses and confers the vision of the all-pervading Self • in one's being as well in all external objects. This rare vision pertains to the realm of the Pure Tatva and reveals the knowledge of God's absolute supremacy.
Acknowledging Him as our master and dedicating all our actions, and the consequences of these to Him releases us from the bondage of Karma. The Lord's practical advice is that we should understand that while all our reactions that are based on likes and dislikes and are very natural, we should not give in to these feelings since they hinder our path to salvation. We have not created our duties. We are given our duties at birth.
Normally people work for the fruit of their actions. When we are not aware of the truth of the Gunas and the senses, we become involved with the affairs of the world and we desire the fruits of our actions.
The feeling of ownership is not only towards the actions but also to the fruits. This attitude does not factor in the discrimination that should help us to differentiate the Atma from the Gunas and senses. But the wise and realised person works without any desire for fruit; in fact, he works only for work's sake. His insight into the role of the Gunas and the senses makes him aware of the higher Self, Atma. So he does not get attached to the actions.
We should remain untouched by the joys and sorrows that generally affect all human beings. --The Hindu dated 31-8-11
