Building Jazz Bass Lines - Expl. 34

Using Harmony in Bass Lines: The basic blues progression used so far is only a harmonic framework. There are numerous possible chord substitutions that any bassist should know. The followong examples show some of the common methods of chord substitution, and some common "changes" used on a blues. It is obviously important that your bass line outlines the new chords. Note that you can "impose" these changes on the group you are playing in (which may or may not be a good thing), or you may have to react to someone else´s changes. Alternate Changes: Here is a common progression that most musicians refer to as "Bird Blues". The bass line uses a combination of chordal and scalar ideas, with a few sequences thrown in.
