My name is Chrystal Scherf, I am 16 years old and a graduating senior at Southeastern High School. My outside intrests are Scouting I enjoy both Girl Scouts of America and the Venturing program through the Boy Scouts of America. I have been involved in both because they offer leadership, experiences and skills that I can take with me a lifetime.I have had countless oppertunities to serve in many areas; such as being a Girl Scouts of the USA delegate of Michigan Shore to Shore Council & serving another 1 year term as Vice president of program for the Venturing Boy Scouts of America,Area 2 Venturing Officers Association.
GIRL SCOUTS PARTICIPATE IN PROGRAM AIDE TRAINING
Cadette Girl Scouts from the Alpena Alcona Area of Michigan Shore to Shore Council participated in a program aide training session July 18 in Alpena.The training program was open to all seventh to 12th grade registered Girl Scouts and provided girls with leadership opportunities.The eight hour training session was conducted by service unit director and trainer Cindy Ranshaw.The training provided basic leadership skills,activity ideas and useful tips on working with younger girls.The Girl Souts who completed this training session each received a pin that signified the completion of the core and specialization training.Following the completion of a 25 hour internship the Girl Scouts will earn a program aide award patch.Serving as a program aide provides a unique leadership opportunity in the Girl Scouts and prepares the girls to become leaders in other areas including schoo,church,home and extra curricular activities.Girl Scouts who participated in the training included Tairah Jasman,Kristina Neumann,Ashley Timmreck,Courtney Marshall and Chrystal Scherf.For More information about the Girl Scouts or join contact registrar Judy Ableidinger at 379-4376 or go to www.gsmists.org.

The Alpena NewsTROOP 2051 EARNS SERVICE AWARDS Troop 2051 Junior & Cadette troop of Alpena Michigan is recognized for 75-1000 hours each of community service with the President's Volunteer Service Award. They are Brittney Blethen,Sierra Newton,Tammy Kish wendi Blethen,Chelsey Szatkowski and Chrystal Scherf. The girls enjoyed helping the Northern Michigan Alpena area. "We cleaned up Partiridge point habitat,planted trees,sewed blankets and quilts for needy mothers and the elderly.The girls also helped with the Alpena Literacy Program by adopting a kindergarten buddy & helping them learn to read. Each girl and leader received a thank you letter from President George Bush and the Points of Life Foundation, and gold or silver pin recognizing her hours of accomplishment. Congratulations to these girls and leaders who gone that extra mile in dedication to serving their communities

Area 2 Vice President - Program: Chrystal Scherf
Chrystal Scherf of Venture Crew #70 from the Lake Huron Area Council's Thunder Head District has been selected to serve as the Area 2 Vice President for the 2010-2011 year. She will also be in charge of programing for Michigan Venturing activities in Michigan. Scherf,age 16, has been in involved in Venturing since 2007. Her favorite Venturing activities are camping,shooting sports,rock wall climbing,horseback riding and fishing. She is currently working with the Alpena U.S. Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office in endangered & invasive species activities. Scherf is the recipient of two Bronze Awards and is currently finishing her Venturing Gold Award. "Being involved in Venturing has seasoned me to a higher level of leadership",she said.She enjoys setting up trips based on their interests. " We as a crew we plan, vote, prepare & go places!" Sherf said, "We have weekend events as much as possible and plan one super trip each month for something special". Community service is important too; we keep up with what the needs are in of the Alpena area and plan volunteer hours to fit seasonal needs. One of the group's favorite organizations to help is the Vietnam Veterans of America Post. "It is a honor to work with such fine Veterans and be part of their annual efforts to serve the community with such wonderful programs as "Feed a Family" during Thanksgiving and the "Toys for Kids Program" during Christmas." Chrystal has organized 5 food drives & made dozens of quilts & blankets to benefit the St.Bernard's Soup Kitchen Friendship Room during Christmas time. Another organization she spent 40 hours helping was the Lincoln,Michigan Baby Pantry. preparing bags for needy mothers complete with blankets,quilts, toys, clothes and new mother items. "Venture Crew#70 is a group of male & Female teens that meet every Tuesday from 7-8:30 p.m. at 1101 Merchant. Chrystal Scherf of Alpena Venture Crew #7070 was recognized recently with the Venturing Leadership Award from Lake Huron Area Council BSA.Making the presentation was Cliff Aldrich,Venturing Adviser of the area Venturing Officers Association.Only two youth were chosen this year from 19 counties of the Lake Huron Area Council,with Scherf being one of them.Her many qualifications included earning two Bronze Awards,CPR and first aid certification,hunter safety certification,Venturing Leadership skills training and serving on the Regional Venturing Officers Association as Vice President of program. Elected for a second year as vice president,Scherf will be instrumental in creating programming needs of 11 councils in Michigan and a portion of Ohio,which make up Area 2 of the Northeast region of Venturing BSA.She has been in Venturing for four years and enjoys the outdoor skills her Crew #7070 offers.For more information,email:chrystal7070@yahoo.com.
