  • Review of "The Honors" at Absolute Powerpop blogspot--

The Honors is top-drawer singer-songwriter pop. "Not the Kind" is an excellent mid-tempo track that recalls solo Donald Fagen, the piano-and-guitar number "I Wait" shows off Bents' pop skills, and the spare ballad "Somebody Got a Hold" has staying power.

Bents moves effortlessly somewhere between pop and pathos. The terrifically catchy "Good Life" has everything you need for a worldwide hit. Add to that the Dylan hair and the elaborate dilettantism that he has on guitar and keys. Bents on stage; a real experience.

Here he takes a decidedly Steely Dan vibe with his keyboard on “Not The Kind.” Kevin gives us a touch of soul on “I’ll Wait” and “On The Spot” is a catchy suite of themes with great unexpected tempo changes. The slow ballads “Somebody Got A Hold” and “Sail Down The River” remind me a bit of Peter Gabriel. And the free-form rhythm and composition of “Downtown” and metallic “Constant Contact” are also highlights. This mature LP always lets the melody lead. An adventurous album that’s hard to ignore.
