Julian is a hip-hop emcee from Vancouver, British Columbia and goes by the stage name JuLS. The name JuLS has 2 origins behind it. It first started off as a childhood nickname and it is also an acronym for Just Unique Lyrical Soul.
Poetry has always been a part of JuLS. When he was a young child in elementary school he would often find himself in school competitions even achieving first place in his category one year. But it wasn’t until 2009 when JuLS decided that he wanted to turn his poetry into stories and deliver them in the art form of rap.
In 2009, JuLS was inspired by an up and coming rapper in the Hip-Hop scene, J.Cole. It was the track ‘Lights Please’ that made JuLS say to himself ‘I believe I can do this. I want to do this’
Although it wasn’t until 2009 JuLS discovered his passion for the art of rap, he was introduced to R&B and Hip-Hop at a young age thanks in part to his brother Chris who is 6 years his elder. JuLS grew up listening to hip-hop artists like AZ, Tupac, Notorious BIG, Snoop Dog, Nas, Jay-Z and Rakim to name a few.
In 2010, he began experimenting and recited his poetry over popular hip-hop Instrumentals. He collaborated with a few of his good friends who are aspiring beat producers and they provided him with 11 original beats. With the members of the team curious to see how they’d fair in the local hip-hop scene they saw this as a chance to finally test the waters in the musical genre they all love the most.
On December 9, 2011, JuLS released his first musical project titled ‘Green Light Go’. The project consists of 15 tracks. 4 of those tracks are JuLS’ rendition to some of his hip-hop influences throughout the years.
After releasing the mix-tape, JuLS took the opportunity to perform at fundraisers for local dance studios, disaster reliefs and political campaigns and open mic sessions to get his name and craft into the local hip-hop scene.
In the last two quarters of 2012, JuLS was given the opportunity to open for some very iconic figures in the hip-hop industry. He was able to warm up the crowds as an opening artists for main acts such as Action Bronson, The Alkaholiks, The Beatnuts and one of his favourite rappers of all time, AZ. JuLS was very grateful for these opportunities and vowed to work harder with the vision of him being the main act in the future.
His focus and dedication translated into a great start to 2013. In the first quarter of 2013, JuLS was able to open for one of hip-hop’s hottest artists out right now, Meek Mill. JuLS was also blessed with the opportunity to open for one of the greatest lyricists of all time, the God MC, Rakim.
Aside from the shows, JuLS has also released another mix-tape titled ‘The Tenfluence’ which is a project that gives an idea to the listeners which artists influenced him with their stories. JuLS also expects his first full length music video to be released in the spring of 2013.
Through a potent delivery mixed with his raps and wordplay, JuLS’ vision is to share his stories, thoughts and vibes locally and universally.
