Now in its third year, the Miss Alpena County Fair Queen Pageant keeps growing in popularity and participation.
"It's a good experience for the girls who participate," said Sherry Minton, co-chair of the contest along with Emily Eagling.
When the pageant first started in 2007, only four girls entered the competition. That number has since doubled, with eight candidates lined up to participate in the event that takes place Aug. 2 at 2 p.m. on the Alpena County Fairgrounds stage.
The eight girls, ranging in age from 13 to 18, will be evaluated by a panel of four judges on evening gown, talent, judge's interview, and their poise and appearance while answering an on-stage question.
Participating in at least one worthwhile organization in the community such as FFA, 4-H or an activity related to the fair also is a requirement of the pageant.
A 2009 Miss Alpena County Fair queen, first runner-up, Miss Congeniality, evening wear winner and talent winner will be selected. The new queen and her court will then reign over the remainder of the fair, Aug. 2-8.
Throughout the coming year, they also will participate in local parades and activities.
Participating in this year's pageant are:
Jessica Aube The daughter of Dale and Karen Aube of Alpena, she will be a senior at Alpena High School. For her talent, she will give a speech.
Meagan Aube The daughter of Wayne and Laurie Aube of Alpena, she will graduate from AHS in 2013. Singing will be the talent she will perform for the judges.
Caitlin Borke The daughter of Ron and Lynn Borke of Hubbard Lake, she is a student at Thunder Bay Junior High School. For her talent, she will sing.
Stephanie Eagling The daughter of Mike Eagling and Jackie, she graduated this spring from AHS. She will perform a dance for her talent segment.
Morgan Meredith The daughter of Renee Meredith, she will graduate from AHS in 2011.
Shelby Schaedig The daughter of Melissa Schaedig and Wayne Schaedig of Alpena, she will graduate from AHS in 2011. She will play the piano during her talent presentation.
Chrystal Scherf The daughter of Edward and Debra Scherf of Alpena, she is a student at AHS and will be singing for her talent segment.
Cara Woolman The daughter of Fred and Bronwyn Woolman of Alpena, she will graduate next year from AHS.
The public is invited to watch the competition. It will include an appearance by the current Miss Sunrise Side, Emily Kieliszewski.
