John Mullanaphy : Well, Photoshop is my main weapon, however I deal more with design and less with photography so my opinion might not be the most solid. However, my brother-in-law also uses Photoshop and his shots are quite splendid indeed. So, one vote for Photoshop (CS4+) here.

Kristen Maiden : I wish I knew how to use it :( *sigh*

Tom Pollock : Photoshop isn't the hardest thing to learn and the best part is it is a whole new skillset you can pick up. Like everything else, the more you use it the better you get so jump right in, find some demos\tutorials online and give it a whirl. Or even check out any local learning centers to see if they offer up relevant classes to help you out :D (community college, high school, library, YMCA, etc).

Dan Bartlett : If you want the functionality, but don't like the price, try Gimp. It's free and very similar to photoshop

Photo's By Jamie Smith : I have to second Gimp. I used it before I used Photoshop. Photoshop is better, but you can't beat the cost of Gimp. Howeve,. Gimps raw editing program (last time i used it) sucks. I'm dieing to try Lightroom. All the pros' use it. you can't to as much as (say) Gimp or Photoshop, but it's a different type of program.

Michael Reimann : I use photoshop and picasa3. You can get lightroom fully functional for 30 days. I tried it but found it way difficult to use. Anything lightroom can do I can do in photoshop.

Photo's By Jamie Smith : Lightroom is more of a work load type of program. supposedly works more for hundreads of shots. i know photoshop only slightly, so i don't know if it's capble of a 800 shot work flow

Michael Reimann : You know, not only can you download free filters and effects for PS, but you can download action files. An action file is when someone does some editing, and saves all their steps as an action file. You apply that action to your image and it replicates all the steps. I have been using PS for a couple years now, and just found this option. I LOVE it for my BW conversions, among other things.
