Photo's By Jamie Smith : My suggetion would be to shoot with a tripod, and a slow shutter speed. Turn that dial to M and see what you can get. When you let the camera do the work, you get what the camera thinks it good. When you make the choises, you have pictures that other people will think are good.
One other thought. When the sun goes down is one of the best times to shoot. The natural colors that are reflected off the sky (when the sun is over the horizen) are some of the most amazing.

Erin Potts : Thanks Jamie! :) It scares me a little to do the M thing...is that all I need to do? I'm guessing not...but I'm still pretty much a digital photography virgin...but I do plan to do a lot more experimenting on this trip. I agree with you about sunsets...and I believe AZ has some of the best!! :) (I'm being totally objective,of course :D)

Erin Potts : Well...I know there's a B&W function somewhere on my camera...I found it once and took 1 picture...I didn't like it very much so I haven't used it again...I do not own photoshop right now, but I am currently taking a college class for it (I use the college computers to do my work...and it's only pictures/work from the book they provide so far...) I do plan to get it sometime soon tho. I imagine that if I had photoshop I would just take the picture in color and change it to B&W if I thought it looked better that way...I dunno...but thanks for the website/blog info!! :) I'll check them out when I get a chance...:) Oh...and I will definitely try the big M!!:D

Erin Potts : So...I used the big M for some of my fall pics... then I must have pushed a wrong button or something because every time I put it on "M" now the shutter takes forever and the picture is all white...I tried to fix it w/o success...so I ended up taking most of my pics in the green mode...sigh...oh well...it was fun while it lasted...:)

Photo's By Jamie Smith : Are you able to adjust your shutter and apiture when in M? The higher shutter speed will give the light less time on the sensor. you can also shut the apiture (higher number lets light in) to balance out the light. I just put some shots of a ass up (if you didn't see them they are of an ass), and I shot them with an ISO of 100 and a F/ (apiture) of about 1.8 and a shutter speed about 3200. I also tweeked it in the post prossesing (one that came with the camera). I brought down the exsposure a little. darkens the shadows, and raised the contrast. I know that sounds a little complicated. but when you get used to it, you'll love what you can do. God knows I'm happy with my ass (and many others that I've got those rich natural tones).
