Soumitra Paul

Background: About Soumitra Paul Soumitra Paul has started his study of the art of tabla playing at the age of ten under the guidance of his guru, Ustad Sabir Khan of the Farukhabad Gharana. He has also taken blessings from Shri Anand Gopal Banerjee. Although from Calcutta, he is an A-Grade Artist of All India Radio and Doordarshan TV New Delhi. He has participated in many prestigious music conferences and festivals around India as well as travelling widely for his performances in France, Germany, Holland, Switzerland, Austria, the UK etc. Soumitra performs both as soloist and accompanist. He performed with almost all of the renowned artists and has experimented with various fusion groups and western classical groups in Europe. He was invited to lecture at the University of Paris and has also conducted master classes at the Birmingham Conservatory in UK. He has received the award of §Taal-Muni§ from Sur Sringar Sansad, Mumbai and §Manav Upadhi§ from Abhinav Kala Parishad, Bhopal. Currently he is working with 'Ragam Maqam Talam' a fusiongroup presenting the old traditions of arabic and indian musiccultur through instrumental adaption of traditional folksongs & dances from the Near East, the Mediterranean & Asia as well as interreligious songs like e.g. Sufi, Mantra or new compositions. Furthermore he supervises intensive classes & workshops in Germany & U.K. this year.
